Fairview
Fairview was constructed circa 1820 by Thomas McKay, son of Robert McKay, the first settler and landowner in what was to become Warren County. The McKay family, descended from Maryland Quakers who settled in the lower Shenandoah Valley by 1731, owned and farmed much of northern Warren County along the Winchester Pike, and during the Civil War saw many troop movements pass their home. On May 23rd 1862 the Battle of Front Royal passed quickly north from the county seat through Cedarville, ending at Fairview with the surrender of the last remaining Federal troops not killed, wounded or captured in town.
Today Fairview is owned by Warren County, having been deeded on a one acre plot by the Cisco Company, and is under management by the Warren Heritage Society. Within three to five years, the site plan for this historic property intends to create a visitation center that can inform the visiting public of Warren County’s rich heritage, direct travelers to historic and tourist sites, and play a role in the commemoration of Civil War events.
Fairview is located on the east side of the northbound lanes of Highway 522/340 approximately 2 miles north of the I-66 interchange.
